Filarms Caiman

I had a lot of problems getting airguns into the Philippines.  I was afraid to try and bring in a good quality piece because of the hassle, possible confiscation and expense involved.

Because of past bad experiences I was very glad ot learn of Filarms and the possibility of having a powerful, accurate and well made airgun available locally with parts available and custromer support.  This is why I am behind Noli and Chris and their efforts to get Filarms off the ground and established as a leading builder of airguns here in Asia.  It is my hope that they succeed in this effort despite teething pains that often happen with new, start-up ventures.

It's not that I have any interest in how these two prosper personally or for that matter how any Filipino business does.  It's very simple.  I am selfish.  I want their airguns available to me by mail order or in retail outlets so I can enjoy my hobby with as little hassle as possible.  Thats it.  Thats why I support them and that's why I encourage them to continue despite any problems or criticism.  It's not about them.                               It's all about me.                         Period!

Now.  About my Caiman.
It's light, accurate and powerful.  I have only had about 250 pellets through it and I have  a lot of changes I want to try.  My pump broke, my fault, and so I'm not shooting right now but I have a 95 cubic foot SCUBA tank and Noli has my adapters on the way so I should be shooing again soon.

Mine is a folding stock version with BigBoy tank and brass barrels in .177 and .22 cals.  I tried the .177 cal but the pellets were going supersonic and accuracy suffered.  I don't have a chrony but a 19 gr pellet is moving over 900 fps according to specs.  I got full penetration of both sides of 6 tin cans at 25 meters for what it's worth.

Let's let the pictures tell the rest of the story.  Judge for yourself.
The gun.
The above pictures have been lightened where needed to show detail but no enhancement has been made.
Some of the folks on Kitching's "Yellow" forum asked for lots of pictures.

The shooting.
I don't have a chronograph but the power is obvious while shooting.   For me this gun is very comfortable to shoot and when I got the trigger adjusted to my liking it felt good.  I started with a Leapers scope in "C" mounts but it was too low to be comforable.  I switched to my Winchester light-weight variable in a one piece Accushot mount and it was much better.  Hold was benched and some shots were taken using a field hold.  Informal shooting mostly so don't expect match accuracy from me.  All shooting in .22 cal with factory setting on hammer spring.
Sight in group after I got on paper.Shots 6 through 10 on pump-up to 3000psi.
Same group with ruler  and a few .22 cal pellets for size reference.
First 10 5-shot groups.  #1 was my best.  Shots 11 thru 60 pressure down to about 2000psi
Sight in group, shot count and group 11 last shot went a bit low.

Conclusion
I still have a lot of fiddling and adjusting to do and the gun is brand new to me.  It's easily the most powerful airgun I own and very nice to shoot.    I'm trying to be objective in my assesment.  This is the first and only PCP gun I have.  The modular aproach Filarms took is a definite plus.  Easy to work on and work with.  Stock finish should be better and on my folding stock the buttpad pieces are wood not plastic but I can find no fault with the mechanics so far.  Seems to be solid, rugged and well built.  The external hammer and see through barrel is a definite plus also.  Easy to clean and check for a loaded pellet in the breech.  Very quiet except for the click of the hammer hitting the firing pin.  Absolutely no felt recoil and the trigger, while not a match trigger, is very smooth on my airgun..  Working the pump is a bit of a pain and time-consuming.  I think the SCUBA system is definetly the way to go, but that's a comment on PCP in general not about the Caiman..
PRO:
Powerful, accurate, quiet, compact, modular, relatively light, atractive and fun to shoot.
CON:
Stock finish.
Buttpad material.
Oh! I forgot to mention.  With stock folded and silencer removed it's only 22" long, and it realy gets your attention when you pull the trigger in that configuration.
